William Shakespeare is world-renowned as one of the greatest playwrights in history, and while 2016 saw the 400th anniversary of his death, his works continue to be performed on stage, as well as depicted and remade through the medium of film. And Shakespeare Week (which takes place in March) continues to be an annual celebration of the Bard's legacy.
Cinema has always adapted the stories and themes of Shakespeare's plays, whether in the traditional manner, or by transporting the action to other periods and settings. In popular films such as The Lion King and 10 Things I Hate About You, we see Shakespeare's stories re-contextualised, demonstrating just how current and relatable the themes of his work continues to be.
Viewing these films can be immensely useful in improving understanding and appreciation of the texts at hand. Filmmaking activity can also be excellent for allowing students to immerse themselves in Shakespeare's language.
