Ages

11+

Duration

Short (1-4 activities)

These ideas within this toolkit are designed to expand on Into Film's series of lessons surrounding documentary He Named Me Malala, and to engage pupils with local and global activism. Activities can be used to engage after-school groups, or form and tutor groups, as part of assemblies or year-group projects. The six modules are flexible and can also be used as standalone lessons or alongside the English lesson plans.

The six modules are:

1. Explore and Identify

Encourages students to harness the power of digital communication such as mood boards and blogging to follow their own passions, just like Malala, whilst also researching into other activists, campaigning for positive change.

2. It's All About Context

Centres around the theme of forgiveness, and suggests a range of group and independent activities to develop this understanding.

3. Networks and Support

Suggests a range of engaging ways in which students can build activist networks with a range of like-minded young people from across the globe.

4. Connecting with your Causes

Uses testimony from refugees as a stimulus to encourage positive campaigning and fundraising drive.

5. Create and Share

Encourages students to express their learning in creative ways, such as podcasts or documentary-making, before considering ways to share their creations with a wider audience.

6. Think Big

Examines the importance of rights to securing fundamental living conditions for all. A democratic system is used to consider the different ideas raised.

Updating our resources

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.

What our educators say

"The Filmmaking Guides have been invaluable in helping novice filmmakers, from ensuring their story is well told, to thinking about light, camera angles and editing."
