The highly anticipated film celebrates the vision and profound humanism of the artist Tish Murtha, a photographer whose powerful imagery captured the essence of working-class communities. Directed by Paul Sng (Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche, Dispossession), the documentary unveils the life experiences, struggles, and achievements of Murtha, questioning the value placed on art and artists from working class roots as well as following Tish's daughter Ella, in her drive to preserve her mother's legacy. The film is produced by Jen Corcoran ("Nascondino" [Hide and Seek]) through Teesside-based Freya Films in association with Hopscotch Films and Sng's Velvet Joy Productions, with cinematography by Hollie Galloway. The voice of Murtha is played by Maxine Peake ("Funny Cow"). After the film we will have a Q&A with the director Paul Sng and producer Jen Corcoran with a chance for students to ask questions.

Synopsis

This biographical film explores the work of social documentary photographer Tish Murtha who dedicated her life to championing working-class communities like the one she grew up in. Born in the northern coastal town of South Shields, she was passionate about using her talents as a photographer to highlight the impact of Margaret Thatcher’s de-industrialisation policies upon local communities in the 1980s. The documentary follows Tish’s daughter, who helps tell her mother’s story by interviewing many of Tish’s contemporaries, along with narration by Maxine Peake who recounts events using Tish’s own words from diary entries and elsewhere. Punctuated by her extraordinary photographs, this heartfelt documentary gives Tish Murtha the well overdue recognition she deserves.
