Michael Winterbottom is one of the industry's most interesting and versatile film directors and his second feature is an excellent adaptation of Jude the Obscure, the final gloomy novel by Thomas Hardy. Jude is a poor stonemason who dreams of escaping his humble origins by getting a decent education. The story's message concerning the restrictions of Britain's class structure in the 19th century still resonates today.
