In this drama, headstrong architect Howard Roark would rather be out of work than compromise his principles, so ends up taking on menial jobs to finance his projects. He falls in love with an heiress and although breaks up with her is dismayed when she marries a newspaper tycoon. The architect, embodying the idea that "man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress", then goes on to blow up a building because it doesn't fit in with his ideals and is soon facing ruin in court as a result.
