He falls in love with an heiress and although breaks up with her is dismayed when she marries a newspaper tycoon. The architect, embodying the idea that "man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress", then goes on to blow up a building because it doesn't fit in with his ideals and is soon facing ruin in court as a result.
