Science Fiction and Fantasy
Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood wrote the novel and playwright Harold Pinter loosely adapted it for the big screen. In this totalitarian fantasy set in the near future, America is renamed as Gilead, a male-dominated police state in which women are oppressed - they have returned to housekeeping or, the case of the Handmaids, are used only to become surrogate mothers to barren couples. It's a grim world with very little optimism.
This visually spectacular German sci-fi classic (made, incredibly, in 1927) sees the rich live in skyscrapers and the poor toil underground.
