Based on a true story, Period and Historical
This powerful film from John Sayles tells a fictional story set against a backdrop of a now little known, but dramatic chapter in American history - the violent conflicts between union members and the authorities in West Virginia in 1920 in which hundreds were killed. The film tells the tale of one group of miners who are attempting to defy their bosses and form a mixed race union and the resulting story is a potent political history lesson and a very enjoyable film.
This adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel centres on a farming family's journey of hardship to California in the Great Depression.
