Days away from gender reassignment surgery, Bree discovers she has a son, Toby, when he calls out of the blue requesting prison bail. Unwilling to disclose her transgender status, Bree goes to Toby’s rescue in the guise of a Christian missionary. Against the ticking clock of her final surgery date, Bree embarks on a road trip across America with Toby intending to return him to his stepfather. Despite a stilted start as both Bree and Toby shield difficult pasts from one another, when family truths are revealed along the journey they are both forced to confront issues, as well as bumps in the road, as their relationship develops.
A beautifully understated, naturalistic drama about childhood gender identity confusion that’s both touching and gently humorous.
