This documentary about German concentration camps is quite an exceptional film, one that is essential viewing for anyone interested in the history of the 20th century. Alain Resnais, a great director of feature films and documentaries, supervised the shooting of new colour footage of two concentration camps in 1955, and assembled the remaining, haunting images from existing newsreel films, stock footage and still photographs. The remarkable commentary was written by Jean Cayrol, a survivor of the camps.
A young writer in New York gets drawn into an intense friendship with a fragile, haunted Polish war survivor and her volatile lover.
