This multi-Oscar winner is a terrific drama, with a larger-than-life but not over-the-top performance from Anthony Quinn at its heart. Alan Bates plays Basil, an English author with writer's block, who travels to Crete hoping the change will help him to write again. Quinn is local rascal Alexis Zorba, who attaches himself to Basil and tries to teach him something about enjoying life. Funny, heartbreaking and ultimately wise, this leaves the viewer feeling transformed as well.
Quirky and touching tale about an eccentric Jewish writer who goes to Ukraine to research his family history.
