It was a brilliantly simple idea, but probably a bit harder to pull off: gather together the best jazz musicians around at the time, in one New York location, and take a photograph. Almost four decades after the picture was taken (in 1958), director Jean Bach tracked down the photographer and the surviving musicians to make this lovely documentary. It avoids the pretentiousness that often creeps in when people talk about jazz, and does a brilliant job of letting us imagine what it felt like to be there.
