Although one of Preston Sturges' lesser known comedies, Christmas in July bears all the writer/director's satirical hallmarks. Dick Powell stars as Jimmy MacDonald, an office dreamer who is convinced he's going to win the $25,000 prize in a competition to devise a slogan for a coffee company. His colleagues play a trick on him by mocking up a telegram telling him he has won but, due to a series of misunderstandings, he is actually given the cheque. Splashing out on gifts for his friends and family, Jimmy soon finds himself in a lot of trouble - and debt.
