In this thoughtful drama directed by Gus Van Sant, Rob Brown plays Jamal, a young man from the tough New York district of the Bronx who, though gifted, deliberately underachieves at school to keep in with his friends. By chance he befriends a reclusive old man who turns out to be the legendary author William Forrester, who had written a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel years decades earlier but has had nothing published since. Forrester recognises Jamal's talent for writing and helps him in exchange for his silence. However, when Jamal is accepted on a high profile college scholarship it threatens to change both their lives.
The arrival of an unorthodox, inspiring teacher to a conservative '50s boarding school has a huge, controversial impact in this famed, touching drama.
