In this twinkly period comedy, Laura Henderson is a rich 69-year-old widow who, aghast at her more staid friends suggestion that she takes up some mundane hobby to pass the time, recklessly decides to buy a ramshackle old theatre, the Windmill, in the heart of Soho. Teaming up with spiky theatrical impresario Vivian Van Damm she is soon staging variety shows, which are a great success, but other theatres follow suit and the Windmill starts to lose custom. Mrs Henderson soon comes up with a risque gimmick - nude performers - and after some initial controversy the punters are soon queuing round the block again. However, as the Blitz of the Second World War rages around them, everyone's spirits and livelihood are put to the test.
