Adapted from Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr Ripley, Plein Soleil was renamed Purple Noon for an American audience. Despite this confusing plethora of titles, this is simply a great thriller with a fantastically chilly central performance from the French king of cool, Alain Delon. As Tom Ripley, plotting murder during a mission to return rich playboy Philippe Greenleaf from Italy to America, Delon is all studied froideur and Machiavellian intent. Italy's simple beauty is a perfect backdrop to a bloody finale.
