Persian (English subtitles)
The debut film by Marzieh Makhmalbaf examines the lives of three women of different ages in Iran and shows just how urgent an issue feminism remains today. It begins with a nine-year-old who is told she cannot play with boys any more: she is now a woman and must live her public life from under a burka. A young wife who rebels against her husband by entering a bicycle race is the second subject, and the third is an old woman who is given a degree of liberation when she inherits some money. But what kind of choices are left to someone who has been a stranger to free-thinking for so long?
