In this noir thriller, Professor Charles Rankin seems to lead a blameless life, working at a college in a provincial American town. In reality however Rankin is Nazi Franz Kindler, hiding out under a secret identity, his past unknown even to his wife. One day he is visited by a fellow war criminal Konrad Meinike, who has been released by a war crimes commissioner Mr Wilson in the hope that he will seek out old colleagues. Rankin kills Meinike and believes he is safe, but a game of cat and mouse between him and Wilson ensues...
