Though the theme of the wronged man is an Alfred Hitchcock staple, this noir-ish drama, based on a true story, is more serious than the director's other, more playful films on the subject. Henry Fonda stars as a nightclub musician who one day visits his insurance company to borrow some money. There an employee thinks she recognises him as the man who robbed the office a few days before. Although innocent, he is arrested and is soon caught up in a nightmarish judicial process with little chance of clearing his name, the stress driving his wife towards a nervous breakdown.
From master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, about a Catholic priest who hears a confession of murder, but bound by faith can't reveal what he's heard.
