Drama, War Films
In 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement. And because their country has been caught unawares, the two friends in this excellent film - the hippy Weinraub and his more militaristic mate Ruso - struggle to find their army unit, getting stuck in traffic on the way to the front and eventually joining a medical rescue helicopter crew in order to get involved. It's a film that's all about the confusion of war, and as a result contains some very gory and distressing scenes.
Kathryn Bigelow became the first female Best Director Oscar-winner for this tense action film about mentally pressured bomb squad specialists in Iraq.
