Synopsis

This collection on four DVDs brings together a wide range of documentaries made in Britain between 1930 and 1950, showing what life was like for the nation's people. It was a tough era involving a rapidly changing and industrialising world, economic depression and World War II. While the black-and-white films might be from before your grandparents' time, don't be fooled into thinking they're all drably old-fashioned - many use state-of-the-art methods and innovative approaches, including poetry and dramatic reconstruction, to get their message across. Of particular note are contributions from director Paul Rotha - People of Britain (Disc 1) is a pacifist rallying call from 1936 and the title feature, Land of Promise (Disc 3) is a controversial argument for post war social housing reform.
