Synopsis

The Messenger is a war film that's all the more effective for not actually being set in a combat-zone. An emotionally devastating drama with humorous touches, it centres on American soldier Will Montgomery. Back from Iraq after an injury, he is assigned to the Casualty Notification Division, a department charged with informing relatives of the injury or death of their loved ones. In many ways, it's his toughest job yet. He gleans tips from his officer partner - an old hand at the task with a deceptively macho demeanor and a drinking problem. But this doesn't prepare Will for his complex feelings for Olivia, a widowed wife he is drawn to seeing again - even though it's against the rules.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
