Justine is getting married in the opulent surroundings provided by her generous sister (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (played by Kiefer Sutherland). It is supposed to be the happiest day of her life. However, she finds herself overwhelmed by feelings of angst and despair, way beyond wedding day jitters. Her family are not helping matters. After the ceremony, attention shifts to a mysterious planet - Melancholia - heading ominously towards Earth, and the different ways in which the various characters respond to its imminent arrival.
