Adapted from the novel by Lisa See, this film juxtaposes the lives of two sets of women, in 19th-century and present-day China, to illustrate the bonds of friendship and women's changing place in society. There are some fascinating insights into pre-revolutionary China and the treatment of women as possessions, many of whom had to endure such practices as having their feet maimed in the name of beauty. However, friendship enables the women to rise above, and their use of 'nu shu', a secret language hidden within the folds of a fan, allows them to express themselves in this poignant film.
Two warriors in pursuit of a stolen sword and a notorious fugitive are led to an impetuous and physically-skilled nobleman's daughter.
