Synopsis

Naive, 23-year-old Laura dreams of becoming a beauty queen to escape her poverty-stricken life in northern Mexico. But an innocent wish quickly turns into an escalating nightmare. Director Gerardo Naranjo uses real events as loose inspiration for a tense and powerful exploration of his country’s drug war. Finding herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, helpless Laura ends up being held hostage by gangster kingpin, Lino, who forces her to work for his bloody narcotics operation. Her resulting descent into increasingly violent criminality is realistically portrayed and consequently all the more harrowing; vividly demonstrating how the instinct to survive can make desperate people behave in ways they never thought possible.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
