This started life as a play (Rafta, Rafta), inspired by another play (1960s hit All in Good Time), but makes an effortless transition to the big screen. Khan-Din updates his source material with great style, realising the parallels between the not-so-swinging early ‘60s (when married couples might not have a place of their own) and the contemporary British Asian community. Earthy and funny with a sweet core, this is a clever marriage of past and present that makes a long-delayed wedding night the source of a lot of comedy and some well-observed home truths.
