Focusing on the ‘over-80’ competitors at the world ping-pong championships, this is a wonderfully affecting, celebratory documentary about living life to the full. Ping-pong attracts fiercely devoted followers, and these elderly athletes are no different, but their dedication is given added poignancy and impact due to the extraordinary lengths they go to to stay active and involved. It would be all too easy for a filmmaker to treat the subjects here merely as inspirational symbols. But they are individuals, whatever their age, and are allowed to shine (and occasionally shock, and often amuse).
