In 1990, a Texas funeral director called Bernie Tiede began a relationship with one of his bereaved clients - a wealthy widow named Marge Nugent. Six years later, he shot her dead with a rifle. Tiede confessed to the murder, but claimed he was driven to it by Nugent's persistent abusive behaviour towards him. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Director Richard Linklater followed the case and adapted the story into a subtle comedy, with Jack Black playing the killer.
The familiar death sentence debate is given fresh insights by an extraordinary director with a unique attitude to life and death.
