Synopsis

Norman McLaren was a Scottish animator, who moved to Canada and became well-known for his unusual, experimental style and the pioneering way in which he combined startling soundtracks with surreal visual effects. While Walt Disney’s studio was realising how effective animation could be as a mass storytelling medium, influential artists like McLaren were exploring its other potentials. His films embrace many art forms including documentary, ballet and humour. One of the highlights of this extensive collection is the Oscar-winning Neighbours, a clever anti-war short which is amusing, shocking and thought-provoking. What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
