Synopsis

Taking us back to the beginning, Kill Your Darlings tells the story of how the lead writers of the Beat Generation came together. Jazz-infused and wrapped in the experimental flare of the Beat era, the film begins in the 1940s where a young, shy Allen Ginsberg began at Columbia University. Meeting the ferociously intelligent Lucian Carr and his band of bohemian friends William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac; Ginsberg is absorbed into their world of hedonistic rebellion. But while they fight together against literary traditions, Carr struggles with personal demons. Based on the true story of Carr's arrest for the murder of estranged friend David Kammerer, director John Krokidas weaves an intriguing plot of love and murder amongst one of the most fascinating literary movements of our time.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
