This frank and gripping drama sees a gay couple living in ‘70s Los Angeles take in Marco, a teenager with Down's syndrome, to live under their roof after their neighbour - Marco’s biological mother - is arrested. Though they bond together as a family, singer and drag artist Rudy and his lawyer partner Paul encounter prejudice from everyone around them about their “unconventional” set-up, and must battle a biased legal system to retain custody. Inspired by a true story and underpinned by great acting performances, this film convincingly shows that committed parenthood comes in different shapes and sizes.
Sean Penn won an Oscar for this inspiring portrayal of gay rights campaigner, Harvey Milk.
