Maria is a 14-year-old girl from a strict catholic family who wants to become a saint and go to heaven. Divided into fourteen chapters, the film follows Maria as she guides herself towards enlightenment, dealing with boys, gospel music and a controlling mother along the way. With each chapter filmed from a fixed angle, the film conjures up the series of paintings usually found in Roman Catholic churches depicting Jesus carrying the cross to his crucifixion. At times deeply affecting, at others light-hearted and absurd this is a uniquely told story about the influence of faith and fanaticism on young minds.
Kirsten Dunst won the Best Actress award at Cannes for her serene portrayal of a wedding bride in this absorbing, mysterious drama.
