Expanding Tolkien’s slim novel into a three-film saga to mirror the earlier Lord of the Rings films was always a hugely ambitious task. Audiences finally have the chance to fully judge whether Peter Jackson’s gamble has paid off with this final chapter. Jumping straight into unfinished business from the previous movie with Smaug the dragon, the series concludes with an extraordinary battle, dwarfing everything that has previously featured in the Middle Earth series. As always, time is found amidst the chaos for intimate character moments, an approach that has always been crucial to the films’ success and the adoration they inspire amongst the legions of devoted fans.
