Based on a true story, War Films
Soon after getting married, Chris Kyle was sent out to fight in Iraq, where he quickly developed an enormous reputation for his ruthlessly efficient marksmanship. Revered amongst his colleagues and decorated by his nation, Kyle is heralded as a symbol of patriotism, however his life soon begins to fall apart. This taut, tense film avoids engaging in wider political discussions in favour of focusing on one man’s psychological demons, both before and as a result of his brutal training and tours of duty. However, morally complex discussions around whom society adopts as its heroes and how they are treated loom in the background of this absorbing drama, told with Eastwood’s characteristic efficiency.
Kathryn Bigelow became the first female Best Director Oscar-winner for this tense action film about mentally pressured bomb squad specialists in Iraq.
