Disillusioned with life in 1970s communist East Germany, single mother Nelly decides to escape and cross the Berlin wall with her son Alexej. Once there however, Nelly struggles to build a new life. Trapped in a claustrophobic refugee centre for months, she faces tough questioning from immigration officials who raise the prospect the father of her son may not have died but is living in the west and continuing work for the Stasi. This tense film builds an atmosphere of paranoia that conveys the psychological as well as practical difficulties of attempting to escape the past in a new country.
A German documentary that gives a fascinating insight to the 80s skating subculture of East Berlin.
