Sherlock Holmes is 93 and living in retirement on the south coast of England, with his housekeeper and her young son Roger, using his brainpower to tend to his beloved bees and ponder over the past in his journals. One unsolved case involving a mysterious young woman particularly preoccupies him, and through flashbacks we learn more about it as Holmes seeks to unravel the mystery before it’s too late. This gentle, humorous film playfully addresses some of his colleague Doctor Watson’s supposed fabrications about Holmes, such as his fondness for pipes and deerstalker hats. McKellen’s Holmes is curmudgeonly, but also possessed of a twinkly humour, brought to the fore in his developing friendship with Roger, who refuses to be intimidated by his intellect.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
