Billy Hope is a champion boxer in the prime of his career when he's struck by a life-changing family tragedy. His grief overwhelms his capability to be a father, and his heartbroken daughter, Leila, is taken into protective services. At his lowest point, Billy is given a chance to get back in shape and fight again in Las Vegas, so he uses this opportunity to reinvent himself and prove he is worthy of taking care of Leila. The film vividly portrays the danger and violence of Billy’s life as a boxer and his destructive behavior outside of the ring, but balances this with warmth and poignancy, achieved in part thanks to a compelling performance from Jake Gyllenhaal.
