After a run-in at his previous school, teacher Jim White and his family are forced to relocate to the poor farming town of McFarland. Despite lack of funding at the school and the pressure on his students, who are relied on to work on the family farm after their studies, Jim is determined to foster their raw talent. Forming a cross-country running team in spite of the challenges, Jim finds himself being drawn into the heart of the community and discovers that making a difference goes both ways.
