When retired alcoholic Woody receives notice in the mail that he is the winner of a million-dollar prize, he sets out immediately for the competition headquarters in Nebraska to claim it. Too fragile to drive, Woody is determined to make the 750-mile journey somehow or other and begins on foot. When it becomes clear that he’s not to be dissuaded, despite the apparent futility of the trip, his son David is sent after him to ensure that he keeps out of trouble. After an uneasy start to the trip, events along the way conspire to help them reach a greater understanding. Throughout this sensitive road movie about father-son relationships, evocatively captured in black-and-white, David attempts to shield Woody from his delusions as dementia increasingly takes hold.
