Dalton Trumbo was one of Hollywood’s most revered screenwriters of the 1940s and 50s until he was accused and blacklisted by the government for alleged involvement with the Communist Party. Stylish and fun, despite the serious subject matter, the film tracks his downfall and time in prison, through to his determination to continue writing and even winning Oscars under a pseudonym, despite being shunned by the Hollywood elite and hunted by gossip columnists. As light touch as many films of the time, the film glosses over some of the darker periods yet remains an interesting biopic of Trumbo’s writing processes, capturing the glamour and politics of a bygone Hollywood era.
