Synopsis

Raised as a prince in a conservative society during the 17th century, Queen Kristina has plans for modernising Sweden and bringing an end to conflict when she begins her rule at the age of 16. With war, politics and religion all hot topics at court, amongst her subjects talk is only of her sexuality and relationship with her lady-in-waiting Countess Ebba. However despite pressure to marry, the queen refuses to compromise her values or freedom, eventually bringing about her self-imposed exile. Exploring issues around gender, religion and politics that remain topical, this historical drama vivdly captures a society torn between tradition and modernity and is a powerful portrait of a fiercely intelligent, resourceful but vulnerable woman.
