This is the second film in the ‘Marseille trilogy’ from director Daniel Auteuil, a remake of a classic film trilogy from the 1930s and adapted from a series of French plays by Marcel Pagnol. In this film, we see waitress Fanny fall in love with Marius who then deserts her for a once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity. Soon after, she discovers that she’s pregnant and must act quickly in deciding what to do next. Consulting with Marius’ parents, Fanny reluctantly accepts the advances of a much older and wealthier man in order to avoid the scorn of the community, but is soon torn when an old flame turns up declaring his love.
