Coming of Age, Drama
English / Hebrew
In 1951, Marcus Messner, an intellectually brilliant but arrogant secular son of a kosher baker in New Jersey arrives at a small, conservative college in Ohio to begin a new chapter in his life. Perhaps not surprisingly, he soon meets and falls for an equally bright, more confident woman, but also finds himself at odds with the administration’s repressive sexual mores and anti-semitic attitudes. Meanwhile the ongoing Korean War – and potential military service - looms ever-presently in the background. Adapted from the Philip Roth novel, this is an engrossing take on the coming-of-age story, intelligently subverting many of its tropes and asking provocative questions of its audience.
Campus-based satire dissecting contemporary racial politics by following four African-American students studying at a privileged university.
