Synopsis

Poland, 1945. A frightened nun appeals to a doctor from the French Red Cross to help with a difficult birth back at the convent. Sworn to secrecy, doctor Mathilde is at first under the impression that the pregnancy is an isolated incident, with the mother’s presence in the convent explained as her seeking refuge after having been rejected by her family. However, it’s not long before Mathilde discovers there are many women there in a similar condition, desperate to keep their plight secret from the outside world. Little by little, the doctor gains the trust of the traumatised nuns, but in the tense postwar atmosphere it’s unclear what fate has in store for the newborn babies, or for the mothers whose faith has been so heavily tested.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
