Born into slavery and brought up on the Turner plantation, Nat’s quick-wittedness is recognised early on by the owners, who take him in to be educated alongside their son Samuel. However, this period of favour is shortlived, and he is soon returned to the field, with his ability to read put to use in his new role as preacher. The calming impact that his words have upon the other slaves is in high demand as unrest stirs in neighbouring plantations, and soon his owner and former playmate Samuel comes up with a scheme to sell Nat’s talent as a speaker. As they travel to deliver placatory speeches, the widespread brutality that Nat witnesses force him to question his role in supporting the status quo.
