Hollywood, 1958, and aspiring actress Marla is attempting to make her name in the film industry. A devout Catholic from a small town, she labours under the demands of her boss, the reclusive and highly eccentric billionaire movie mogul Howard Hughes. One of Hughes’ demands is a strict policy that no contracted actress should have a relationship with one of his employees, something put to the test when Marla falls for her equally ambitious driver, Frank. Set in the period known as Hollywood’s golden age, this is a portrait of glamour, ruthlessness, and corruption in the entertainment industry, directed by a man who knows it as intimately as anyone.
