In 1971, Katherine Graham was the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, The Washington Post, trying to secure the paper’s long-term financial security by launching on the stock exchange. When its rival The New York Times began publishing The Pentagon Papers – a devastating, classified government report outlining how successive presidents knew that Vietnam had turned into an unwinnable war, but fought on regardless – Graham and her editor Ben Bradlee race against time to catch up and expose the level of cover-up taking place. Their actions launched an unprecedented battle between the media and government, raising issues around the freedom of the press that have once again become extremely pertinent.
