Intending to retire after one final title defence of his middleweight championship, boxer Matty Burton is put through a punishing encounter which leaves him with permanent brain damage. After initially appearing unharmed, Matty collapses at home much to the shock of Emma, his wife. After awaking from his coma, it’s clear to all around him that Matty’s injuries are long-lasting, both physically and mentally. Having to look after both Matty and their baby daughter Mia – and with the boxing community initially nowhere to be seen – Emma must fight to keep her family together. ‘Journeyman’ is an emotional passion project from writer-director Paddy Considine which demonstrates the devastating impact extreme sports can have.
