Struggling to accept the fact that his relationship with an older Latino man has ended, Los Angeles weatherman Sean is made to take leave from his job after suffering a breakdown live on air. Feeling lonely, Sean attempts to start redecorating his house, but soon realises he’s not up to the job. After spotting a group of Mexican migrants looking for work, he pays a man named Ernesto to perform odd jobs around the house, despite neither speaking the other’s first language very well. As their friendship develops, Sean begins to enjoy and rely on Ernesto’s company more and more, eventually opting to pay Ernesto to join him on kayaking and hiking trips as well as to attend parties together. But though Sean has acquired a surrogate partner of sorts, Ernesto has a family waiting for him at home. ‘Papi Chulo’ is a warm and likeable comedy-drama about mental health, migration and the impact of friendships.
