Using clips from over 160 titles, this documentary looks at the history of the romantic comedy through the ages; from its screwball origins through World War Two and on to icons including Marilyn Monroe, before focusing on films from the 1990s and early 2000s. The voiceover narration from the director and other contributors, including writer/critic Simran Hans and filmmaker Charlie Lyne, talk about the impact these films had upon them growing up, as well as critiquing various aspects of the genre. Topics addressed include toxic masculinity, the representation of female characters, and a lack of on-screen diversity, but it also highlights positive aspects including rom-coms which attempt to subvert the genre in some way and the progress made within it in recent years. ‘Romantic Comedy’ is a fun, accessible overview of the genre and the impact it’s had throughout film history.
