Acclaimed German filmmaker and notorious wildcard Werner Herzog sits down with Mikhail Gorbachev, the former president of the Soviet Union to discuss a multitude of topics ranging from the talks he held to reduce nuclear weapons and the reunification of Germany. The film is comprised of three conversations that were shot over, six months due to Gorbachev’s failing health but at 87 years old, Gorbachev is still as sharp as ever, proving more than a match for his often provocative interviewer. Herzog provides us with a character portrait of one of recent history’s most significant leaders and a tool to explore the intricacies of power and personality.
